Born out of a real passion for the hand-crafted sign and good design, Field Signs has given the New Zealand signage industry well over 40 years of continuous service. An early adopter of new technologies and a guardian of traditional skills, we have earned a reputation as the go-to sign company with knowledge in every aspect of the trade.

Everything is designed and made under one roof in Ellerslie — so the brand stays consistent from the business card to the building.

Wide-format digital printing with environmentally friendly, hard-wearing HP latex inks and the latest HP output. Spot-colour runs via Gerber Edge foil on high-performance vinyl; contour-cut decals a specialty.

04 Keeping the craft alive
In an industry that long ago went digital, Field Signs never put the brushes down. Hand lettering, gold and metal-leaf gilding, air brushing and traditional sign work remain a true specialty — the kind of craft that turns a sign into something people stop to look at.
In 1997, owner Chris Field founded the New Zealand chapter of the LETTERHEADS — a worldwide community devoted to preserving, nurturing and developing the traditional skills of the trade.

Chris Field

Chris Field has more than 35 years of owner-operator sign-making experience. Traditionally trained — starting with brushes and paint, learning hand lettering — he qualified two years early for his Advanced Trade Certificate and won the Norwood Award for Top Apprentice across all trades in New Zealand in 1978.
In 1997 he founded the LETTERHEADS movement in New Zealand, established to preserve, nurture and develop traditional sign-making skills. He served as Chairman and then President of the NZSDA, and was an instigator of the New Zealand Sign & Display Awards — where he was Chief Judge from 2007 until 2015.
In 2015 Chris was honoured with Life Membership of the NZSDA; in 2017 the Australian LETTERHEADS community honoured him with Life Membership for his work preserving traditional skills.
